All you need to know about engine oils
The oil replacement with high quality lubricant at the specified interval is a major interest of every vehicle owner, which increases the life span of the engine, if sufficient care is taken about the quality of the oil.
The primary function of the engine oil is to lubricate and cool the moving parts of the engine, and to prevent metal to metal connection. The lubricant reduces the probability of wear caused by mechanical load, and washes away the contamination.
When should the engine oil changed?Â
- The engine oil should be changed at the interval recommended by the manufacturer generally between 10,000 – 30,000 km performance, or once a year.
- It is desirable to check the oil level from time to time with the help of the dipstick.
- The same grade of oil must be used for replenishing when it is required to reach the proper oil level during the interval of oil change.
- Always use an oil having the viscosity and grade recommended by the manufacturer. This recommendation is given in the manual of the vehicle.
Reasons and sign of deterioration of engine oil
- Always comply with the change period recommended by the manufacturer.
- The oil change interval may be reduced, if the vehicle is used among heavy conditions and in short travels, because such operation has a negative effect on the oil quality.
How to change the engine oil?
- Set the vehicle on a horizontal surface.
- Unscrew the oil drain plug. The actual location of the drain plug is shown in the manual of the vehicle. Check the seal and replace it as necessary.
- Drain the oil into a prepared receiving vessel. It is important to remember that the engine oil is considered as a hazardous waste, the handling of which is regulated.
- The oil filter shall also be replaced at the time of oil change.
- Â Make sure that a propel tightness is achieved when the filter I installed.
- Fill about 80 % of the of the quantity recommended by the manufacturer first. Then fill the rest of the oil gradually in decilitre batches, while checking the oil level with the help of the dipstick. The proper oil level is indicated by the marks “Min” and “Max” on the dipstick.

When should the engine oil changed?
- The engine oil should be changed between 10,000 – 15,000 km run on the average.
- The oil should be changed once a year even if the km interval is not reached.
- Check the level and condition of the lubricant after every 1000 km with the help of the dipstick.Â
- Do mix lubricants having different grades and makes.Â
- It is important to use only the lubricants recommended by the manufacturer.
- Never fill too much oil into the engine!
Reasons and sign of deteriorating engine oil
- Deposit is formed on the wall of the engine if lubricants having different types and grades are mixed.
- The liquid loose its properties after a long use, which is indicated by the change in its consistence and colour.
- The long operation of the engine in idle run has a negative effect on the quality of the lubricant. In this case the change interval shall be reduced.
How to change engine oil?
- Park the vehicle on horizontal surface, wait 10 minutes to let the engine cool down.
- Unscrew the drain plug of the oil sump.
- Drain the used oil into a vessel.
- Change the oil filter too.Â
- Before installing the filter, pour about 200 ml oil into it, and lubricate the seal ring of the oil filter too.
- Fill about 80 % of the of the quantity recommended by the manufacturer first. Then check the oil level from time to time with the help of the dipstick. The top value of the oil level shall be between the marks „Min” and „Max.
- Check the seals and the washers, as well as the oil cap. Replace these parts as necessary.
