Types of ignition transformer

• • • Distributor and boxed
      • • A spark is created at certain rotation angle of the crankshaft. With the help of the ignition distributor this is forwarded to the spark plug in the appropriate cylinder.
    • Double spark (without distributor)
      
      • • Produces two sparks simultaneously to a pair of cylinders. However, the air-fuel mixture is able to get ignited only in one cylinder, so the other spark “is lost”. 
    • Pencil
      
      • • It ensures the uniform combustion, as well as the stable and strong generation of spark. It allows the stopping of the respective cylinders as necessary. Various winding combinations can be found in the winding packages, which ensure the lowest loss of ignition winding voltage. 
    • Double ignition winding
      • • Two ignition windings are located in a single casing
        • These are connected directly to the relevant spark plug
        • They allow the reduction of ignition delay and a more accurate adjustment of ignition timing

Signs of a faulty ignition transformer

In most cases the faulty part can be recognised by visual inspection

• • • Cracks, black stains and longitudinal stripes appear on its surface    
      
      • • In this case no spark is generated in one of the cylinders, because a portion of the current is conducted to the cover.
    • Missed ignition occurs in rainy weather
    • The dynamic behaviour of the vehicle deteriorates
    • The engine would not start

Reasons of faulty ignition transformer

Overheating

• • • • • Failure of cooling system
        • Inadequately adjusted ignition timing
        • In extreme case it may melt the cover and cause short circuit
