Brake disc

All you need to know about the brake disks

Nowadays the disk brake systems are used in the car and small commercial vehicle categories. The friction causing the braking occurs between the brake disk and the brake lining.

The brake disk is part of the brake system; its function is to brake and stop the vehicle. The brake disks are made of durable material due to the high thermal load.

The kinds of brake disks are distinguished as „internal cooling” and „full” brake linings.

The latter is used primarily on the rear axles, while internally cooled brake linings with ventilated larger diameter are mounted on the front axle of the vehicle almost exclusively. Their thermal conductivity is much better, they are capable of withstanding the higher loads on the front acle.
So called perforated sports brake disks are commercially available, which are used in high performance vehicles, and also in racing cars. Their benefit includes the enhanced brake action, the better heat dissipation. However, the brake lining wear faster.

Faults of brake disks

  • Wearing of brake disk.
  • Uneven wearing on the surface of the disk, uneven material thickness (forming of shoulder).
  • Deformations.

Reasons of faulty brake disks

  • Natural wear and tear of the part.
  • Inadequately installed brake lining.
  • Damage of mechanical origin.

Signs of faulty brake disks.

  • The steering wheel and the wheel moves out from the straight line.
  • Whistling or screeching sound during braking.
  • The pedal and the steering wheel vibrates during braking.
  • Significant increase of braking distance.

For safety reasons it is desirable to carry out works on the brake system in professional workshops!

FAQ

Look around in the help center.

When should the brake disk be replaced? How thick should the disk be?

  • The time of replacement has probably come, when the driver experiences wobbling and vibration as well as screeching sound. In order to confirm that the problem comes from the brake disks, it is necessary to check the damage of the brake disks.
  • Manufacturers usually cut a wear indicating groove in the surface of the disk to facilitate the recognition of wear. If such marks are no longer observable, then the parts shall be replaced. The indication of the minimum thickness may be placed on the edge of the disk too. Measure the value with a calliper, and compare it to the value specified by the manufacturer.
  • The extent of allowed wear depends on the make and type of the part. This value my vary for the different parts such as traditional (solid), ventilated, bored, wavy surfaced. Usually, it has to be in the range 1.5-3.0 mm.

What makes the brake dis faulty?

  • Extensive wear and tear of the parts
  • Long exposure to humidity
  • Damage of mechanical origin
  • Frequent and strong braking

How to replace the brake disks?

A new brake disk can be installed easily; you might do this yourself at home. Perform the following operations:

  1. Lift the vehicle with a jack. Remove the wheel bolts and dismount the wheels.
  2. Remove the bolts from the rear of the brake saddle, then dismount the saddle.
  3. Remove the saddle housing too if necessary.
  4. Remove the disk by unscrewing the fastener from the wheel hub.
  5. Install the new disk.
  6. Attach the saddle housing, the saddle, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
